A Catalogue Of Horrors
I spread the Epic Rites Press corpus across my desk. The books resemble a monstrous Peacock’s fan: A Bellyful Of Anarchy by Rob Plath, Hellbound by David McLean, Dead Reckoning by Todd Moore, Doing Cartwheels On Doomsday Afternoon by John Yamrus, Frostbitten by Mark Walton,The Broken And The Damned by Jason Hardung, Crudely Mistaken For Life by Wolfgang Carstens, Laughing At Funerals by David McLean, The Epic Rites Journal: Building A Better Bomb, There’s A Fist Dunked In Blood Beating In My Chest by Rob Plath, Blood And Greasepaint by Karl Koweski, Crunked by Jack Henry, Can't Stop Now! by John Yamrus, and An Age Of Monsters by William Taylor Jr. – all visually stunning masterpieces by Pablo Vision.
In fifteen months Epic Rites Press has sold almost fifteen hundred books. As I reflect on precisely how Epic Rites Press has achieved this milestone in the “small” press, a great debt of gratitude must be acknowledged to Pablo Vision, the madman behind every Epic Rites Press exterior. There is the strength of the material, the care and attention that went into organizing and editing the material, the quality of the book construction, the promotion, marketing, etc, of course, but it’s Pablo’s dynamite exteriors that make readers excited to pick up the books in the first place. This is especially true when it comes to bookstores, where Epic Rites Press publications must stand out among thousands of others.
I’m fortunate to be allied with Pablo Vision. It’s a partnership that almost never happened. When Rob Plath and I started construction on our three hundred page monster in 2008, we originally commissioned another artist to produce the exterior for “A Bellyful Of Anarchy.” After months of waiting and waiting and not receiving a rough draft or an update or any message whatsoever, I contacted Pablo Vision and asked if he was interested in the project. I had known Pablo as an author of poetry and prose. He had submitted to the Epic Rites Journal in the past – and his submissions were always those rare great ones where you respond immediately to say “Awesome! Absolutely!” I had also seen some of Pablo’s multi-media work – all of which had left me speechless. I contacted Pablo and asked if he was interested in producing the exterior for Rob Plath’s book. Within twenty-four hours, Pablo delivered the incredible exterior of “A Bellyful Of Anarchy.”
Since then Pablo continues to deliver visual explosions with brilliant exterior after exterior – interpreting the material perfectly. The work of Pablo Vision is the face of Epic Rites Press.
And what a lovely smile we have!
